The current Spider, which debuted at the 2006 Geneva show, has come under criticism for enthusiasts for its less-than-sporty driving dynamics. Based on Alfa Romeo’s front-wheel-drive platform, the current Spider is a looker but is outclassed by the BMW Z4 and Mercedes-Benz SLK when it comes to high performance driving.
That said, Alfa Romeo hasn’t exactly revealed many details about the powertrain configuration of its show car. According to the automaker, it uses a small displacement 1.75-liter four-cylinder – an obvious nod to the historic 1750 powertrain used as the range-topping engine toward the end of the Duetto’s first production series in the late 1960s.
The 2uettottanta concept car is a clear sign that Alfa Romeo is looking to get back into building a lithe two-seat roadster for the next-generation Spider. Expect a production-style version to debut in the next couple of years.
