The all-new 2012 Buick Verano, based off the recently introduced Chevrolet Cruze, is the luxury brand’s third new model in the past two years and will go head to head in Canada against the Acura CSX (its only real competitor in the luxury segment, though it isn’t available in the U.S.).Verano is due in showrooms in fall 2011, among other items, the next-generation radio system with OnStar connectivity that allows the use of the driver’s smartphone.
The Sync-like next-generation radio includes a navigation system, satellite radio, USB and auxiliary input jacks, Bluetooth with streaming audio, speech recognition, text-to-speech conversion of SMS texts, smart phone app integration and Gracenote music organization for external devices, including Playlist Plus and Album Art feature
The 177-hp Ecotec direct injected variable valve timed 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine will be standard fitment, linked to a six-speed automatic. The 2.0-litre turbo “four” will become available at a future time. With the 2.4, VeranoElectrically assisted steering has a ratio of 15.5:1 to reportedly provide better precision at all speeds and a solid centre feel. Four-wheel disc brakes with standard anti-lock system and electronic brake distribution provide quick controlled stops, while full-function traction control and StabiliTrak electronic stability control provide a measure of security during higher speed manoeuvres. accelerates to 100 km/h in about eight seconds, and returns an estimated fuel economy rating of 7.6 litres per 100 km on the highway.
Buick also took care to insure a quiet cabin with laminated glass, triple door seals, laminated steel panels in the firewall, a five-layer thermal fibre headliner, recycled denim material in rear structural components, extensive use of nylon and foam expansion for gaps in the steel structure, refined chassis dynamics and specially manufactured wheels (17-inch alloys standard, with two 18-inch options).
